1.   Summary

This product bulletin announces the availability of Open Systems SnapVault 2.5 (OSSV) for First Customer Ship.

Open Systems SnapVault (OSSV) is an advanced disk-based data protection solution that's ideal for protecting file data residing on server systems running Windows, Red Hat and SuSE Linux distributions, as well as leading UNIX operating systems. By combining the benefits of SnapVault with the vast storage capacities of NearStore, FAS or V-Series storage platforms, OSSV customers can exploit the benefits of block level incremental backups to protect their open systems data residing on non-NetApp primary storage.

While both remote office and data center style configurations are supported, OSSV has been proven to be particularly well suited for protecting data located in remote offices connected to central data centers via wide area network (WAN) connections.

2.   What’s New

The OSSV 2.5 release continues to support important management tools, like Protection Manager, while unveiling new operational enhancements and expanded Microsoft Windows platform support.

      Management

Continued support for Protection Manager for enhanced monitoring, reporting and logging of OSSV configurations and operations, including:

§         Session status: active, completed, failed and concurrent sessions

§         Data movement: number of files and blocks transferred, estimated time to complete backup transfers

§         Phase 1 platform support for Operations Manager improvements is limited to these platforms using the NetApp Host Agent. Support for other OSSV platforms is planned for a later release.

Additional details about NetApp Host Agent features and operating system support can be found here.

Expanded platform coverage for Microsoft Windows operating system

  • Native 64-bit OSSV clients for use with 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows
  • Fully protect 64-bit Microsoft Windows System State
  • New support for Microsoft Windows Event Log backup and restore

Installation and Operations – Improved network efficient transfers and encryption support

  • New support for strong encryption (128 bit and greater AES) combined with software-based data compression for use with Logical Replication (LREP). Combined encryption and compression support for LREP is available for all supported platforms: Windows, Linux and UNIX. LREP greatly reduces the time needed to perform the initial baseline (full) transfer of data from an OSSV client onto a SnapVault secondary volume by eliminating the need to transfer the initial full backup across limited bandwidth wide area network connections. Efficient, secure data movement using portable disk storage is now possible when using LREP through the added encryption and compression support.
  • New support for compressed backup and restore (“over the wire”) transfers. With compression rates similar to LZ or GZIP levels, OSSV 2.5 now allows customers to compress backup and restore transfers for improved network efficiencies.

Note: OSSV 2.5 compressed backup and restore transfer enhancement requires Data ONTAP 7.3.
